Reshaping Your Story: Recognising Limits and Choosing Growth (Part 1)

Updated: Jan 6

Personal growth is the core of becoming a better leader, but some factors slow or limit progress. These limitations can range from external factors like a lack of resources and societal expectations to internal struggles like intrusive self-doubt or subtle anxiety.

Overcoming challenges leads to growth and wisdom

Growth doesn’t begin with doing more—it starts with gaining clarity. Before challenges can transform into opportunities, we must recognise the limitations that shape our thoughts, habits, and decisions. Often, what holds us back isn’t the situation itself but the mindset we bring to it.

Let's take an honest look at our personal limitations, initiate a mindset makeover toward growth, and learn how to identify and replace the beliefs that quietly keep us stuck.

1) RECOGNISE LIMITATIONS

Identify and Acknowledge Limitations

The first step towards overcoming limitations is honestly identifying and acknowledging the specific areas requiring attention. It takes intentional time and focus to evaluate and pinpoint the patterns that repeat and trip us up.

Is it personal management or misplaced priorities? Financial constraints? Negative self-beliefs? Procrastination? Fear? The quickest and easiest way to identify and connect with limitations is to ask questions.

Ask These 4 Limitation Questions

Here are four limitation exploration questions to ask yourself;

  • What things am I struggling with right now?

  • What are the external and internal factors related to this struggle?

  • Are there patterns of experience or behaviour that I have repeated?

  • What do I want or need to improve?

Ask God

Prayer is absolutely vital for personal growth and development. Transformation only happens in the context and framework of relationships. A relationship with God and relationships with others. If you can listen and hear God's voice, the correction, the prompts, the guiding towards truth and revelation, then it becomes easier to identify the areas that HE is pressing on for change. Sometimes that is healing. At others, it is developing wisdom, or working on a character area. Asking HIM questions and being open to the answers is the plumbline focus for taking responsibility and being intentional about choices and changing actions.

Ask a Friend or Mentor

I have a few close and trusted friends whom I regularly invite to ask me the hard questions that I don’t like to answer. I need their help. This type of accountability is essential for diving deeper and learning how to make lasting changes. It is easier to identify limitations with the insight and perspective of those who see us at our best, living with fulfilment, and are beside us at our worst and most discouraged.

It requires courage to ask vulnerable questions and listen to honest and sometimes painful answers, which may expose areas of weakness or even failure. It isn’t easy to hear with open ears and accept honest critique. Vulnerability indicates maturity to begin gaining clarity and focusing on areas that need attention and strategic action.

2) MINDSET MAKEOVER

From Fixed to Growth

There are two types of mindsets that we naturally and unknowingly lean towards.

A fixed mindset is the belief that abilities, intelligence, and talents are fixed traits that individuals are born with and that these attributes cannot be further developed or improved. Because people with a fixed mindset tend to believe that their intelligence and talent are predetermined, they exert less effort into improving or developing new skills. They perceive failures as reflections of themselves and avoid challenges that may disrupt their self-image.

Example:

A student might believe that they are not naturally talented or athletic and that no amount of practice will make a difference. They may decline to join sports teams or participate in physical activities because they believe they will always fail at them.

A Growth Mindset is the foundation on which abilities, intelligence, and skills can be developed and improved through effort, learning, and perseverance. It is the belief that individuals can consistently grow and evolve by embracing challenges, seeking new strategies, and valuing the learning process. Challenges are valuable lessons and opportunities for growth through learning, feedback, and new experiences.

Example:

Another student may be a weak swimmer. They focus on putting in the effort and valuing the process. They practice consistently and persist through setbacks. They view success as a result of effort and are willing to invest time and energy, knowing that improvement takes time.

Mindset Shapes Development

Cultivating a growth mindset is the foundation for personal development. We may have unknowingly fed unhelpful habits or thoughts about ourselves or our abilities, and accidentally increased the limitations’ strength and influence.

Limiting Beliefs

Although I love writing and developing my ideas, I, unfortunately, embraced the misaligned fear that I wasn’t good enough to branch into writing as a career. I needed to reevaluate this limiting belief and the faulty underlying factors that formulated and fed my default thoughts and thinking habits. Hidden mindset barriers were preventing me from taking steps forward into new possibilities. Of course, skills and abilities, such as writing, can be developed with effort, practice, and dedication, but thoughts and mindset habits are powerful game changers.

I may have a growth mindset in other areas, but this is a personal example where I identified a fault line of weakness which damaged my confidence and decisions.

A fault line is a problem area that may not be obvious on the surface, but it could cause something to fail.

3) REPLACE LIMITING BELIEFS

Replace self-defeating thoughts and limiting perspectives with effective strategies that will contribute to achieving your goals.

Change happens through a progressive process of discovery and small steps. e.g., starting to write and publish articles to build skills and confidence. Asking questions, learning, and responding with action based on evaluations and feedback strengthen the new growth processes.

It helps to focus on the growth and development process rather than the target goals or the time it takes. The unrealistic or idealistic expectations can become discouraging when the reality requires more work. Value the journey of change as much as the destination. Adopting a growth mindset can turn limitations into learning, change, and growth development opportunities.

Develop a Clear Vision and Strategy

Vision and direction are essential for staying on track.

A clear vision is crucial for personal growth for direction, purpose, and motivation. Vision is a compass that helps guide decisions, set goals, and align priorities with values. Without vision or direction, it's easy to get lost and fall off track when difficulties or distractions arise.

"Write the vision;

make it plain on tablets,

so he may run who reads it." Habakkuk 2:2

This verse teaches the importance of not only seeing the vision but of writing it down. As we engage with the recording process we also stir up obedience and faith to take action. Writing develops a sense of clarity and process.

Clarity is a powerful motivator, keeping us dedicated and committed to our growth journey. It helps us remain resilient to challenges and setbacks. Clarity provides focus

Finding Your Why

Simon Sinek, a renowned author, speaker, and leadership expert, has gained recognition for his concept of "Start with Why." He emphasises the significance of understanding and articulating our purpose or "why" in personal and professional contexts. According to Sinek, knowing our why provides us with a clear sense of direction, fuels our motivation, and enables us to make meaningful decisions aligned with our values.

Success is embracing the challenge to push your boundaries.

The same approach and concept apply to personal growth. With a strategic vision and a clear understanding of the why behind your direction and purpose, your short-term and long-term goals become more defined.

A wish list of aspirations does not make change happen. Wishes are not realities. We must create a strategic and actionable plan. Set realistic, attainable goals that challenge you and develop an achievable action plan to accomplish them. You can break down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks and track your progress with a coach, mentor, friend, or co-worker.

Awareness Prepares the Way

Awareness is the first step toward change. When you recognise your limitations, challenge fixed thinking, and begin to replace limiting beliefs, you create space for growth to take root. This process isn’t about self-criticism; it’s about self-leadership. As you practice noticing your thoughts and choosing more uplifting perspectives, you prepare yourself to respond differently to challenges.

In Part 2, we will build on this foundation by turning insight into action and exploring practical ways to rewrite your story and transform challenges into meaningful opportunities for growth.
