“…and a time to build up” Ecclesiastes 3:3

Today focuses on the season and purpose of ‘building up.’ We probably like this concept because it sounds more positive and comes with a natural expectation, BUT it has to be done well.

Build Carefully

There are many buildings constructed poorly and too quickly here in the Philippines. Some walls are not straight, and the mistakes are frequently covered by plywood or cement to hide the faults and shoddy work.

Buildings easily collapse in strong storms or earthquakes when they have shallow foundations.

Unfortunately, when construction companies cut corners and use substandard materials or even unqualified workers, these are the buildings that collapse or are easily damaged in earthquakes or by extreme weather.

Invest in Foundations

Building up can refer to brand-new construction, which requires proper design and blueprints. It can also involve renovations and repairs to an existing building. For new projects, construction always begins with the foundations before any visible work is done above ground.

When we built our ministry centre, we spent thousands of dollars on the foundations, with nothing visible above ground for the first year. The mix of concrete and metal must be precise to support the structure above. Although this process is time-consuming and costly, it is essential.

Evaluate First

Strong foundations require time, effort, and unseen investment.

A season of repair and restoration indicates that some areas have worn down over time due to ongoing use or exposure to the elements.

Restoration should always begin with a thorough evaluation; we must check whether our foundations—our beliefs about God and ourselves—are still secure.

These hidden areas are often worn and damaged over time. We may not notice the hairline cracks that appear as a result of tremors or multiple storms. Each crack gradually weakens and compromises the entire structure.

Restoration is not about covering up weaknesses; it is about fully restoring the strength and longevity of the building. Attention to detail and precision are crucial.

🌱 Reflection Questions

  • What areas of my life have some cracks and need some attention right now?

  • What goals and dreams am I carrying that require God's design and blueprints?

  • What am I being called to build or rebuild?

  • How can I be part of restoring and building others up this week?
