CEMENT GARDEN

A few inches beneath the topsoil we hit cement. The repeated ring sound of shovel hitting solid revealed the ground was full of demolition ruins.

Cement Hidden Underground

Years ago, chunks of flooring and walls from an interior renovation project were moved outside temporarily while work was underway. Time gradually passed and the discarded pieces were forgotten and eventually pressed underfoot. A few plants grew over the burial site but they never really flourished.

The soil looked fine on top but our plans to plough the ground and plant seeds instead became an excavation to dig out and remove all the discarded and crumbled cement.

More work.

More time.

More sweat.

More energy and effort than expected.

We started as 2 lone gardeners but more hands came to join us without request or invitation.

Lugging buckets back and forth. Removing the old and filling the trenches with fresh life giving soil.

Vision is contagious when it is accompanied with action. When others SEE the changes at work instead of just hearing idea-talk they want to be a part of it.

MOMENTUM is a force that something has when it is moving. It has magnitude (size) and direction. It grows and increases!

It is NOT a single 'moment' event. It cannot create itself. It needs CHANGEMAKERS who combine a dream with consistent effort to MOVE with forward motion. As others capture and take hold their combined force increases the speed and the change.

It seemed like a setback.

It took longer.

It ached more muscles but it was an opportunity for MORE!

Now we have an evolving and daily expanding community garden that everyone is excited about and contributing to.

It may not be the design we first envisioned but the journey of growth and inspiration involving and alongside others is growth and success for us all.
