Joy is a Position: Exchanging Anxiety for Trust

"Rejoice IN THE LORD always" (Philippians 4: 4)

Happiness depends on what is happening around us; it is largely circumstantial.

We are happy when we have a promotion, when our health is good, when our grades are high, our finances are secure, and our relationships are thriving.

We become anxious, worried, and stressed when challenges arise, tensions rise, conversations become strained, and we feel out of control, unsafe, and unsure.

Happiness comes and goes like the wind, changing direction and strength, but joy is a steadfast position that we need to learn to live and thrive from.

Joy has nothing to do with what is going on around you. Joy has everything to do with what is going on inside you.

"Chairo" is the Greek word for rejoice. It means to be joyful, and it is independent of external circumstances. It reflects what is happening within us and where we are positioned.

True joy is only found in one place. We may seek it in our ambitions, goals, and successes, but our true position is IN HIM!

We rejoice not because there are threats of war, rising inflation, or uncertainty about the future, nor are we merely trying to elevate our mood. We rejoice because we are hidden IN HIM. Abiding in Him means we find security not in the ever-changing circumstances that swirl and shift daily, but in who He is.

Joy is not about a positive mindset or trying to find a way to more inner happiness. There is only ONE STEP - Repositioning ourselves and remaining there!

Joy understands and recognises that God is sovereign. He rules, reigns, and is unmoved.

It is not an emotion; it is a place of rest, security, and confidence.

Paul wrote these words from imprisonment and chains. Yet, he could confidently urge others: "Do not be anxious about anything" (Philippians 4:6).

A woman reaches up in a field of sunflowers with text: Joy is a position.

Anxiety does not control situations, but it can overwhelm our emotions and thoughts, diminishing our awareness of God's power and presence when we shift our focus away from Him.

Fear, worry, and anxiety cloud our ability to see an unlimited God. Challenges become magnified and dominate our perspective, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and doubtful.

Joy is not an occasional hope we encounter if we are fortunate; it is a position from which we can operate with clarity, boldness, assurance, and peace.

Philippians 4:5 reminds us: “The Lord is near.”

His irremovable, unchangeable position changes everything when we move closer. Encountering God’s nearness changes the way you face stress or uncertainty. It puts Him in the foreground and the background. He is in every part of the picture. This is why "the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:7)

A security guard stands outside a building.
Peace stands guard over the soul.

Peace is the security guard who accompanies and works alongside joy. Our emotions, thoughts, and insecurities are held in custody, watched and protected. Our hearts and minds need His guardianship so we don't stray into doubt and questioning.

We need to experience and know these two operating and overriding the narrative and chaos. There is an exchange available; from anxiety and insecurity into trust and confident dependence.

I pray you reposition yourself in Him today and rediscover the power of joy and peace overruling the fears you have been carrying.
