SHRINK & SHRIVEL: When comfort becomes complacency

Updated: Jan 9, 2023

'Haven't you grown!?' relatives exclaim...comparing our kids heights with last memory or visit.

Each year a few inches taller,

Celebrating the increase with surprise and wonder...How fast the time passes, how quickly they grow and change....!!

'Measure me again' just to check.

Accuracy matters!

Yet over time we gradually lose that anticipation or expectation; physical growth slows down and other areas join the plodding pace.

We stop measuring!

Eventually it loses significance and unconsciously we stop trying to reach our head to that extra half centimetre line.

This is as far as we go!

Seeking comfort.

Resisting the stretch.

Our voice & volume quieter.

Perhaps we even begin to shrink?

"But we do not belong to those who SHRINK BACK and are destroyed, but to those who have faith...." Hebrews 13:39

Shrinking back is a retreat.

Moving away from the risk;

Real and perceived dangers.

Safer and familiar territory where we are assured of security, protection, and defence.

Less stress!

We stop pushing forwards.

Sometimes quitting altogether is a tempting option.

Too much work required.

Too much energy sapped.

Too many problems to resolve.

Draw back!

BUT retreating from frontline living is a dangerous compromise.

The comfort becomes complacency.

Stagnant and unaware of

life minimising.

No marks to measure.

No comparisons.

No reality checks!

Downsized.

Shorter.

Smaller.

'Less is more' we declare!

And we are momentarily persuaded that we made the right choice.

Comfort convinces the unrealised potential!

And yet we wonder....!

What if?
