STINKHORN FUNGUS: Exposing the ugly

Updated: Jan 9, 2023

This yucky looking plant is called a STINKHORN!

It grew up overnight and indeed has a pungent odour fitting the name!

I previously dug and removed one 2 weeks ago with 5 bulging mushy sacks like half melted marshmallows from under the soil and disposed of it. BUT this morning another one had appeared!

Apparently it is a fungus with spores underground which likely explains the regrowth. It can grow as fast as 1cm every 5 minutes!!!!!! 😯

It is amazing how something so ugly and smelly can spring up in just a few hours while the plants and seeds I am carefully trying to nurture take so long to sprout and grow.

An interesting metaphor for how quickly the unwanted can accelerate and multiply despite our efforts to remove all traces and how we must be watchful! They can appear so rapidly and unexpectedly with a stench that changes the surrounding atmosphere.

This time I carefully dug out the whole area of soil to remove any hidden spores and let it dry out. By changing the environment I hope there will be less likelihood of a smelly return.

I think our hearts and lives need the same attention. Digging and clearing to prevent fungus spreading from underground hidden places which can sprout up with a repulsive aroma that impacts everyone!

Time to dig deeper so we smell sweeter! 🌻
